History of the Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno

The Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno, s.r.o. (ÚAM) was established in 1959 in compliance with increased cooperation between VÍTKOVICE, state-owned enterprise, and the Department of Elasticity, Strength and Mechanics of the Military Academy Brno (Vojenská akademie). Since its foundation the Institute has focused on solving practical problems exceeding common knowledge and possibilities of designers and engineers. The Institute prospered. The application of scientific knowledge in the field of mechanics of rigid and pliant bodies and the environment, the evaluation of strength limit states and the development of progressive, reliable and competitive steel structures, pressure vessels, storage tanks, fluid systems and structure parts have become the core activity of the Institute.

The Institute was founded by prof. Ing. Vlastimil Křupka, DrSc., who was simultaneously the Head of the Department of Elasticity and Strength of the Military Academy Brno at that time. The trademark VÍTKOVICE Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno at VAAZ (Military Academy of Antonín Zápotocký) was created at the very beginning of the existence of the Institute. Prof. Křupka, DrSc. was managing and successfully developing the Institute of Applied Mechanics for a long-term of 32 years till 1991. During his stint at a university abroad from 1961 to 1965, prof. Ing. Jiří Novotný, DrSc. deputised for him. Prof. Křupka ended his active career at the Institute  at the age of 83. From 1991 to 2009 the Institute was managed by prof. Ing. Stanislav Vejvoda, CSc. who focused especially on nuclear energy. Since 2009 Ing. Lubomír Junek, Ph.D. has been Managing Director of the Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno.

First the Institute was a part of VÍTKOVICE, a.s., the VÍTKOVICE Research and Development Division. In 1994 the Institute was transformed into a joint-stock company. During the production crisis in VÍTKOVICE, the Institute was sold to companies in which ČEZ, a.s. had a majority interest. From 18 December 2000 the owners of the Institute were Ústav jaderného výzkumu Řež, a.s. (Institute of Nuclear Research in Řež, joint stock company) that held a 60% property interest and I  C Energo, s.r.o., Třebíč that held a 40% property interest in the Company. In 2004 I&C surrendered its interest in the Institute and Ústav jaderného výzkumu Řež, a.s. has had a 100% interest in the Company since than.

The cornerstones of the Company's credibility are responsibility, reputability, reliability and efficient customer service. This enables us to find satisfactory solutions while meeting customers’ requirements, as well as an optimal ratio of price to the scope of services provided. The company has adopted a slogan “Creativity, erudition and customer satisfaction are the key to success”. The company really adheres to this slogan which is reflected in a steady increase in revenues and sales. The Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno has implemented the ČSN EN ISO 9001:2009 quality system. The Czech Institute of Accreditation has issued a Certificate of Accreditation under ČSN EN ISO/IEC 17 025:2005 for the testing laboratory No. 1228 which is a part of the Institute.

The number of employees of the Institute has never exceeded 44. The Institute prefers quality to quantity and moreover its premises are rather limited. Each of the executive employees is a specialist developing his/her expertise on a broad theoretical base. The management supports broadening of expert knowledge in the field of applied mechanics both financially and by granting study leave.

The key customer of the Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno is ČEZ Group a.s. and its subcontractors. The volume of direct performance in the field of energy for ČEZ is up to 60% of the turnover of the company. ÚAM Brno focuses mainly of dealing with operational problems occurring in energy generating equipment.

The Institute of Applied Mechanics Brno holds and uses a full licence of the ANSYS program. Powerful computers with multiple processors are used for still more complicated nonlinear numerical simulations.
